Essential Oils 101

What are Essential Oils?

If you have ever enjoyed the scent of a rose, you’ve experienced the aromatic qualities of essential oils. Working in a flower shop, we get to embrace these qualities on a daily basis!

These naturally occurring, volatile aromatic compounds are found in the seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers, and other parts of plants.

Essential oils provide plants with protection against environmental threats and play a role in plant pollination.

In addition to their intrinsic benefits to plants and being beautifully fragrant to people, essential oils have long been used for food preparation, beauty treatment, and health-care practices.

How do I use Essential Oils?

Essential oils are used for a very wide range of emotional and physical wellness applications. They can be used a single oil at a time or in complex blends in one of three methods:

Aromatic

Certain essential oils, when diffused, can be very stimulating, while others can be calming and soothing. Diffusing essential oils can also cleanse and purify the air of unwanted odors.

This is a great way to use your oils and have them affect your whole family without them even knowing!

Use a doTERRA diffuser that have lights, auto-shut off and aren't hot or dangerous.

Another way to use your oils aromatically is to put a drop of oil on the palms of your hands, rub together and cup over nose and mouth, and inhale deeply. It's your own personal diffuser wherever you are!

Topical

Essential oils are easily absorbed by the skin and can be safely applied topically.

Using Fractinated Coconut Oil (FCO) with hot oils or oils that you want to spread throughout your body can be very beneficial. Using a carrier oil like FCO will help absorb the oils into your skin and have a deeper effect.

Continuous and consistent application of your oils is very important and can greatly enhance your oil experience.

Internal

Certain essential oils have a rich culinary history and can be used as dietary supplements for targeted wellness.

One of the perks to using certified pure therapeutic grade oils is being able to ingest them for incredible overall wellness.

If you have used other oils in the past, using oils internally may have not been possible because of their additives. Luckily with doTERRA, our oils are sourced and tested in the purest way.

Some oils aren't ingestible because of their chemical compounds. Make sure to ask and read if you aren't sure.

The doTERRA Difference

When you choose doTERRA, you are choosing essential oils gently and carefully distilled from plants that have been patiently harvested at the perfect moment by experienced growers from around the world for ideal extract composition and efficacy.

Each doTERRA essential oil is also carefully and thoroughly tested using the strict CPTG Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade® quality protocol. Experienced essential oil users will immediately recognize the superior quality standard for naturally safe, purely effective therapeutic-grade doTERRA essential oils.

While there is a science to the distillation of essential oils, it is also an art. Distillers not only rely on years of experience, they also employ modern technologies and techniques.

The most common method of extracting essential oils is a low-heat steam distillation process. In this process, pressurized steam is circulated through plant material. The essential oils are liberated from the plant and carried away by the steam. When the steam cools, the water and oils naturally separate and the oil is collected. To ensure the highest quality oil extract with the correct chemical composition, the temperature and pressure must be closely monitored. Too little heat or pressure and the oil will not release; too much, and the oil’s composition and potency will be affected.

Our Purity and Testing

The purity of an essential oil is its most important characteristic. An essential oil that isn’t pure means you run the risk of putting germs, heavy metals, or adulterants onto or into your body, which can provoke irritation, adverse effects, or even sickness. Without an accepted standard for essential oil quality, doTERRA created its own testing process, calling it CPTG Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade®. The CPTG process certifies that there are no added fillers, synthetic ingredients, or harmful contaminants in their essential oils that would reduce their efficacy. doTERRA even goes a step further, putting all their products and the packaging through a battery of tests to ensure a long and effective shelf-life. This protocol ensures potency, purity, and consistency batch to batch.

The CPTG testing begins immediately after distillation with each oil being reviewed for its chemical composition. A second round of testing is carried out at our production facility to ensure that what was distilled and tested is the same essential oil as was received. A third review of the chemistry of the oil is conducted in a three-phase procedure as the oils are packaged into the bottles we use as consumers. Each of these tests confirms that the essential oil is free of contaminants and unexpected alterations during production.

The CPTG Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade quality protocol includes the following tests:

  • Organoleptic testing
  • Microbial testing
  • Gas chromatography
  • Mass spectrometry
  • Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR)
  • Chirality testing
  • Isotopic analysis
  • Heavy metal testing
